We hand-prune each of our 29,000 vines. This takes us about three months each year. To speed up the process a barrel pruning machine goes through all the red grapes to take off all the long canes. We cane-prune the Riesling so it isn’t part of this barrel pruning process. It is an amazing machine. It is essentially two big rollers with teeth. The rollers travel vertically though the vines with the teeth cutting off the canes. It also speeds up the bio-degrading of the canes under the vine row.
